On Sept. 24, the Ashland University Student Senate passed a resolution that created a new position: an Officer of Diversity and Inclusion. This position’s purpose is to give a voice to the diverse student population of AU.

With the help of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Student Senate came to the conclusion that diversity is found in each and every person; they all have different experiences, backgrounds and identities.

The Officer of Diversity and Inclusion will be able to speak to minority experiences and provide a dedicated voice for them on Senate.

Student Senate took a variety of positions into consideration when creating this position.

The final resolution, which passed unanimously, states that “all Ashland University students are included in existing representation, but experience unique challenges and circumstances regarding diversity and inclusion that may be overlooked in the absence of particular attention and knowledge.”

The position will be elected every spring cycle election and have one vote.

Yosola Ajibade was elected to the position on Oct. 7 and sworn in on Oct. 8. She will serve until the spring semester of 2021.
